June3d 1681:
Alice Davis saw 3 or 4 Indians creepeing up to William
Keeds house and as soone as she see them she screeked out
and they runn behind a Tree and William Keede came out
with his Gunn but durst not goe to them haveing noe more
powder and shott but what was in his Gunn

The first of June 1681 :

John White sec four Indians at Stephen Garys Plantation

at Transquakin all painted and well armed, he went towards
them and they went away John White

Major Thomas Taylor informes the board that according to
his Lspps Order he had made all strict enquiry into the nature
of the severall complaints daily made by the Inhabitants of
Dorchester County grounded upon the feares and jealousies
they apprehend from the Indians that in ordr thereunto he had
lately been at the Nanticoke ffort and spoken with the

Emperour who had confidently assured him that none of his
Indians had offered any insolency to the English that he had
strictly commanded his Subjects that vsed the English planta-
tions that they should upon their approch thereunto or upon
their encountring any English man in the woods lay downe
their armes and hold up their hands tyed with a white Cloth
in token of peace and Amity, that if any Indians at any time
did otherwise present themselves the English might freely
fire at them and kill them by wch meanes they might come to
discover what Indians they were
Whereupon issued the following ordr of Councill and the
two severall Commissions to Major Taylor and Capt Henry
Tripp viz

By the Lord Propry and Councill
Maryland ss:
Forasmuch as severall Complaints have been made to his
Lspp: the Rt honble the Lord Propry in Councill of severall
insolencyes committed and affronts given by severall Indians
on the Eastern shore in Dorchester County who have
appeared painted and in a warlike posture to the greate terror
of the good People there, And whereas his Lspp Did there-
upon ordr Major Thomas Taylor and Capt Henry Tripp of
the County aforesaid to Enquire into the prmisses and if need
were to address themselves to the Emperour of Nanticoke for
Redress.
And whereas the said Emperor and greate men thereupon
did deny that any of his Indians had ever appeared in those
parts painted or had ever affronted the English there and for
