they cause to come before you such and soe many honest and
lawfull men of this Province by whom the truth of the matter
may the better be knowne and Enquired after. In Testimony
whereof we have caused these our Letters to be made Pat-
tents. Witness Our Self at our City of St Maries the twen-
tieth Day of June in the sixth yeare of our Dominion over our
sd Province &c Annoq Domini One Thousand six hundred
Eighty & One.
At the same time the Councill did Declare and it was the
opinion of this board that if any Indians at any time presented
themselves to any English Plantation or appeared in the
woods painted they are (according to the Articles made with
the Pascattoways &c Anno 1666) to be Deemed as a Common
Enemy, and also if they appeare unpainted with Armes and
shall upon demand to lay downe their armes refuse soe to Doe
they are to be taken for Enemies & dealt withall accordingly.
Memdu. this should have preceeded the foregoing, and
should have been entred in fo: 177: but being there omitted is
here entred as followeth.
