356 Proceedings of the Council of Maryland, 1678-1679.
Lib. R. barbarous murder Committed about the lower End of the
Towne in St Maries County, some of which are said and
reputed to be Choptico Indians, And whereas his Lspp by and
p. 180 with the advice and consent of his Councill hath appointed
Wednesday next the two and twentieth instant at nine of the
Clock in the morning the Day for their examination and
tryall at the City of St Maries.
Ordered that Major William Boareman high Sheriff of St
Maries County give notice thereof to the King of Choptico
desireing him with one other of his greate men to be present
at the proceedings, assureing them of a safe conduct thither
and back again, and in the meane time that he ordr all his
subjects to keepe the Towne and not stirr out to or neere any
English Plantation for that it may be prejudiciall and
altogether unsafe for them soe to doe untill such time as the
English may be better able to distinguish their friends from
their ffoes. It is also ordered that Major William Boareman
himself accompany the King of Choptico downe and give his
attendance at this board by the time and place aforesaid and
that he give notice to Vincent Mansell to doe accordingly

Maryland ss.
Whereas there hath lately been committed a Barbarous
murder on some of the Inhabitants of this Province in or
about the lower end of the towne in the County of St Maries,
and whereas there are thereupon taken and in custody eight
Indian prisoners some of wch are said & reputed to be neigh-
bouring Indians of the towne of Choptico whose examination
and tryall his Lspp by and with the advice and Consent of his
Councill hath ordered and Determined to be at the City of
St Maries on Wednesday next the two and twentieth Instant.
Ordered that Coll William Chandler high Sheriff of Charles
County upon sight hereof give Notice to the Pascattoway Mat-
tawoman and Nanjemaick Indians that upon noe pretence
whatsoever any of them presume to come to or neere any
English Plantation, but keepe their severall & respective
Townes or fforts for some time least the English (upon the
perpetration of the said late murder) thereby enraged and not
knowing how to distinguish their ffriends from their foes
take them to be of the latter rank and Deale with them
accordingly
