At a Councill held at St Peters at the Chancelors house the
19th Day of June Anno 1681:

produced by his Lspp and read to the board a Letter from
Capt Brandt viz.

May it please your Lspp:
In Obedience to your Lspp Commands of the 16th of this
instant to Coll William Chandler, have in every respect
answered my self, James Smallwood and two more hath been
with the Sinniquas whom we found in sight of the Zachaiah
ffort treateing with our Indians, I made knowne to the Sin-
niquo by one of our Indians who I conceive rightly under-
stood them, your Lspp had a Desire to treate with them, they
replyed they were much in want of provisions and could not
stay, for answer told them if two or three of them, would goe
Downe to your Lspp: I would provide them some Corne and
kill them a beife to supply their wants, untill such time their
greate men returned from your Lspp: their answer was when
they had treated with the Pascattoways they would treate with
us, the Conference betweene them held neere two houres and
much Peake was given by our Indians to them and by them
recd: and much friendship past betweene them and sundry of
our Indians came frequently amongst them when this ended
they Desired me and my small Company to goe farther with
them where we found the Body and conceive them to be
neere two hundred, they held a Councill which lasted four
houres but could not perswade them to come in to your Lspp: by
noe meanes, neither could gett them to stay untill such time
I could advise your Lspp of our proceedings but immediately
comanded the Camp to remoove, we asked of them where
they were intended, they replyed for Pascattoway where their
Canooes lay. Wee made them to understand your Lspp was
much their ffriend and intended them noe harme and gave
them caution how they came into our plantations unless it
were in friendshipp. While the conference lasted betweene
us severall of the Zachaia Indians came out of the ffort, and
when we tooke leave of them the Indians that belonged to

the ffort proffered to returne, whom they deteined and con-
ceive intends to take them away, I returned to the ffort and
gave the Indians notice thereof and gave them caution not to
trust them; I shall make further inquiry as to the Indians soe
deteyned (if returned) and give your Lspp: Accot thereof, or in
