336 Proceedings of the Council of Maryland, 1678-1679.
Lib. R. twelfth instant he being then at Manahowickes Neck there
addressed themselves to him the Kings of Mattawoman and
Choptico and pittifully sett forth to him the distressed condi-
tion they were in being in continuall expectation of their
Enemies approach and being Surprised & cutt of by them,
that not long since five Choptico Indians were taken away
from their hunting Quarters on the Beavef Mannor seemeing
to wonder that his Lspp had not heard thereof before, they
likewise mooved his Lspp for aid and assistance urgeing that
they had reduced themselves unto that Condition meerely
by their ffriendshipp to the English in the late expedition agt
the Susquehannohs insoemuch that they dare not stirr out to
plant their Corne and did therefore expect to be protected by
the English, that they were very importunate with his Lspp to
lett them know what they might trust to whither they might
be assured of aid and assistance from the English according
to Articles or not, His Lspp: told them that he did not conceive
them to be in such imminent danger as they represented being
now Seated soe neere the English whereto they replyed that
both they and the English very well knew that the Enemie
would not disturb the English, but sought onely their lives
without any injury to us His Lspp then assured them of a
Supply and thereupon ordered Captn Randolph Brandt to
returne those twelve musketts wch he had lately recd: from the
Mattawoman Indians again into their Custody for their present
Defence. His Lspp also declared his Opinion to the King of
Choptico that he thought it might be very necessary and Con-
venient for him and his Indians to joine with at Nanjemy by
wch meanes being inforted altogether they would be enabled
to make a better Defence, but the King of Choptico replyed
that as to that he could make noe result without haveing first
consulted his greate men who were not then present.
Resolved that an Ordr from this board be directed to Coll
Henry Darnall to Employ some pson whom he shall think fitt
to inquire into the truth of that Report of the five Indians
being lately taken away off the beaver Damm Mannor & to
Certifie the same to his Lspp with all convenient speed.

Aprill 16th 1681:
Whereas his Lspp hath been given to understand by the
Kings of Mattawoman and Choptico that five Choptico
Indians were lately surprised and taken prisoners from their
hunting Quarter on the Beaver Damm Mannor
Ordered that Coll Henry Darnall upon sight hereof Employ
some pson or psons whom he shall think fitt to enquire into
the truth of that Report, and that the same be (upon such
