on trade, soe that the planter and Merchant are both forced
to make many debts wch causeth many suites at law, as also
that speedy Justice in the recovery of Debts is therefore the
life of all trade, and also that speedy Justice may be done
betweene party and party, We have Assigned you the said
William Surges, Samuel Lane, John Welsh, Nathaniel Heath-
cott, Henry Stockett, Richard Hill, Thomas ffrancis, Nicholas
Gassoway, Edward Burges, John Sollers, Henry Ridgely,
Edward Darcey and Richard Beard Junr or any four or more
of you, (whereof you the said William Burges, Samuel Lane,
John Welsh, and Nathaniel Heathcott are alwaies to be one)
Justices within our sd County of Anne Arrundell, to heare and
Determine all causes or Actions of Debt howsoever and in
what manner soever Ariseing, All Actions of trespass upon
the case, ariseing for goods, wares, or other things delivered,
money or goods lent or upon Note, booke or Accompt with-
out restraint to any summe or Quantity whatsoever, Also all
Actions of trespass, quare clausum fregit, (provided noe title
to land depends upon the triall of such Actions) Detinue, sur
trover, Replevin, Actions of Accompt, Covenant, waste, As-
sault, menace, Battery, and imprisonmt Actions of Slander for
words spoken, provided that in the Declaration drawne and
filed in and upon any the sd Actions of trespass, quare clau-
sum fregitt, detinue Sur trover, Replevin, Actions of Accot
Covenant, waste, Assault menace, battery, and imprisonmt
or Actions for words spoken before mentioned, the Damages
laid doe not exceed the summe of sixteene hundred pounds of
tobacco. And therefore we command you that at the certain
Dayes settled by the Law of this our Province for holding
Courts in our said County, the said Actions you enquire into,
heare and Determine, and after judgemt Execution to award,
Doeing therein what to justice appertaineth, according to the
Lawes and reasonable customs of this our Province, Saveing
to us the Amerciamts and other things to us appertaineing,

And to all his Majties Subjects resideing here undr our imme-
diate ptection or tradeing within this Province their right of
Appeale, and bringing writts of Error in our Provll Court as
now by Law is settled. And Wee command the Sheriff of
our said County that at the dayes and places by you or any
four or more of you to be appointed as aforesaid, he cause to
come before you such and soe many honest and lawfull men
of his Bailywick by whom the truth of the prmisses may the
better be knowne and enquired into, And we doe hereby
Declare that it shall and may be lawfull, And we doe hereby
Authorise and empower any one (and noe more at any one
time) of our Justices of our Provll Court resideing and Inhab-
iting in our said County of Anne Arrundell to sitt with the
