296 Proceedings of the Council of Maryland, 1678-1679.
Lib. R. The Contents of all the foregoing severall Lettrs being
duely weighed and Considered by his Lspp and Councell here
this Day it was advised and Concluded of that Ordrs be sent
to Coll Wells requireing him to enquire into the whole
matter and fully informe himself of the truth thereof, and cer-
tifie the same to his Lspp with all expedition, giveing notice to
the Inhabitants both of the said County of Baltemore and also
of Cecill County to stand upon their guard defensive not
makeing any excursions or marches after or in pursuite of any
Indians without speciall ordrs from his Lspp: That the more
weake ffrontire plantations be strengthened by people from
other parts of the County where the same is more naturally
strong and out of Danger or otherwise by a Supply from Coll
p. 123 William Burgesof Anne Arrundell County, to whom likewise
ordrs to be sent Commanding him to afford them assistance
upon occasion & notice given him from Coll Wells; That
the rash and unadvised pceedings of Capt. Waterton be also
strictly examined p Coll Wells & the truth thereof with what
Accot he shall be able to give of the same be Certified to his
Lspp with all expedition that due regard may be had there-
unto; that Armes and Ammunition be sent to Baltemore
County to be distributed among the Inhabitants, who are to
make good the same in kind at next shipping That Coll
Wells be Empowered to press boate and hands to come from
thence to Mattapony for conveyance of the Armes & Ammu-
nition to them as afore. That a Letter be writt to Coll Tailler
and Coll Burges giveing them to undrstand how ill their
breakeing open his Lspps: Lettrs hath been resented by his Lspp
and his Councill, and requireing them not to presume to doe
the like any more. The ordrs were accordingly issued &
Letters sent being as followeth viz.

By the Lord Propry & Councill
May 26th 1680:
Ordered that Coll George Wells of Baltemore County doe
by all waies and meanes possible endeavor fully & truly to
informe himself of the late Rencounter betweene some
Indians & some of the Inhabitants of the sd County of Balte-
more, and the true occasion thereof, and that when he hath
soe Done he rendr an Exact Accot thereof to his Lspp with all
expedition to the End that all necessary care may be taken
for the safe guard and Defence of the Inhabitants from any
future assaults or attempts that may be made upon them, in
the meane time that they stand upon their guard defensive
by noe meanes makeing any excursions or marches out after
or in pursuite of any Indian whatsoever. And for the better
enabling the more weaker ffrontire Plantations to Defend
themselves it is also Ordered that Coll George Wells send
