therefore I thought fitt to acquaint your Lspp of it soe soone as
possibly I could. In their engagemt I undrstood p the Indian
that they severall times discoursed with each other, and that
they lye scattered about and kill severall horses for their pro-
vision, if your Lspp thinks fitt, it were needfull that some pson
in our County might have power to press both horse and men
when such occasions prsent to give yr Lspp speedy notice, not
else but I Remaine

Wch said Letter was by his Lspp: communicated to some of his
Councill (to say) the Honble Philip Calvert Esqr Chancelor Willm
Calvert Esqr Secry, Ltt Coll. Thomas Taylor, Vincent Lowe
Esqr Surveyr Genll & George Talbott Esqr Councellor whose
opinion being asked therein they doe advise and it is con-
cluded that his Lspps ordrs be directed to Capt. Randolph
Brandt of Charles County commanding him with one Squad-
ron of his troope consisting of 20 men (whom he shall think
fitt) forthwith to march to the Pascattoway ffort there fully to
informe himself of the truth of the said Report, and that for
his better Information therein John Stone of the same
County gentl be commanded to accompany the said Brandt
to the said ffort and to afford him all necessary aid and assist-
ance as an Interpreter between him & the sd Indians, and that
both the said Brandt & John Stone render an exact of their
pceedings unto his Lspp by Monday next the Seaventeenth
instant at furthest, in ordr whereunto the said Brandt to be
fully authorised and empowered to press man and Horse in
any part of the said County for conveyance of the same to
his Lspp: and at all other times hereafter upon the like occa-
sion when soever it may happen, concerning the premisses.
His Lspps Commisso. was accordingly directed to Capt. Ran-
dolph Brandt in the wordsfoll. viz.

Charles Absolute Lord and Propry of the Province of
Maryld and Avalon Lord Baron of Baltemore &ca To Capt.
Randolph Brandt of Charles County greeteing. Whereas
wee are credibly Informed and given to undrstand that a con-
siderable party of strange Indians to the number of about
three hundred are lately come downe and enforted them-
selves neere to the Pascattoway ffort in your sd County to the

greate terror and amazemt of the English Inhabitants in those
pts not knowing what their Designe may be, These are there-
fore to Authorise and empower as also strictly to charge and
command you the said Capt Randolph Brandt forthwith to
