272 Proceedings of the Council of Maryland, 1678-1679.
Lib. R. Barree that he was a Lying Dog and that he would throw
him behind the fire, But Barree replied again that it was true
Enough, and that his the said Rosewells name was in the list,
that Mrs Hill had it in her Custody. The Deponent further
saith that the said Barree drew his knife and whetted upon
his Bootes and swore that an Irish man should cutt Rosewells
throate within three daies, and that the said Barree should
also say that this Designe had beene knowne before in Eng-
land, and that Mr John Darnall while he was in England was
summoned before the King and Councill about it, being taken
p mistake for Coll. Darnall. The Deponent further saith that
the next morning he repeated the same words over again to
Dr Barre wch he had spoken the night before as neere as he
could collect them askeing him if he remembred any thing
of it to wch the said Barree replied that he did owneing all
that he had said to be true.
Jno Manley. Last Exam: upon his Oath saith that from St
Johns Day to the 30th of Decemb: last himself and severall
others in Company had been at Capt Coodes house on wch
said 30th Day of Decembr Mr Rosewell borrowes a boate of
Capt Coode to goe on board Shipp wch he did and gott Mr
Cloud toe go with him, that towards night they came again
ashoare and brought Dr Barree with them, Rosewell soe
soone as they came into the house tells them that he had recd:
good news, for I am saies he Excommunicated as Barre tells
me, yes saies Barree its true Enough, and that for keepeing
Xmas with Hereticks, at wch your wife is very much troubled
p. 101 and soe is poore Mrs Hill, for saies he you have been two
daies at Capt Ferards, two daies at Capt Slyes and now I find
you here, at which Capt Coode tooke him up and bid him be
quiett, and drink a cupp of Sider, and not come there to call
ffolks Hereticks Whereupon Barree fell into a passion and
said it was true enough sweareing that there was a troope
of Catholicks ready to cutt of all the Protestants in Maryland
in three daies time to wch some of the Compa makeing answer
said it was a lye and not possible to be done Oh saies Barree
you are mistaken you doe'nt know what a hundred brave
men can doe, and they are all brave gentlm and well armed,
that he the said Barree was one that he had a good horse and
Case of pistolls; That Mr John Darnall instead of Coll.
Darnall had been summoned before the King and Councill in
England upon this very Accot but Coll Taylor makeing Oath
that he was not the man he was taken for was again dis-
missed and further the Dept saith not.
Dr James Barre, Being brought to the board by command
given to the Sher. of St Maries County in whose custody he
was then a prisoner was also examined upon the severall
