Wells of Baltemore County that severall Indians had been
lately seene lurking about the Plantations in the said County
wch hath created such feares & jealousies in the Inhabitants
that it is to be feared they will (if not speedily supplyed with
some assistance from other parts) Desert their Plantations.
Was proposed by his Lspp to the Councell what course to
take to prevent the same and to secure the Inhabitants from
any attempts that may be made upon them by the Indians.
It was Advised and Concluded on that Coll William Burges
of Anne Arrundell County be ordered to Supply that County
with twenty men forthwith to be sent us for the Defence of
the Inhabitants there if Coll: George Wells and Capt John
Stanerby with the Advice and approbation of the Commis-
sioners of that County shall Desire it and the necessity of the
County may require it. And accordingly Ordr issued forth in
the words foll: viz.

By the Lord Propry and Councell.

Ordered that Coll: William Burges of Anne Arrundell
County forthwith Supply the Inhabitants of Baltemore County
with a pty of twenty men to be Drawne out of the sd County
of Anne Arrundell for the Defence of the said County of Bal-
temore provided Coll: George Wells and Capt John Stanerby
of the same County or either of them with the Advice and
consent of the Comrs of that County shall signifie to the said
Coll: Burges that such supply is necessary, and the condition
of the County may require it for its Defence and security, or
otherwise at any time, hereafter upon such notice given to the
said Coll: Burges by the said Wells and Stanerby as afore-
said The said Burges is to Supply the said County with such
a number of men as aforesaid. Dated the 5th Day of June in
the fourth yeare of the Dominion of the Rtt Honble Charles
&ca over this Province Annoq Dmi 1679 :

The Pascattoway Indians haveing lately sollicited the
Choptico Indians for a pty of twenty men to assist them in
Conducting back an Annacostin Indian that lately came from
the Sinnequos (the same importing greatly (as they say) both

themselves and the English undr this Governmt) And the said
Choptico Indians not consenting undr pretence that they have
not leave from his Lspp so to Doe, and therefore know not
how the same may be approoved of by the English; Wch
being considered by the Councell they Doe advise and it was
Concluded that notice be given to the said Choptico Indians
as also to the Mattowoman and Nanjemy Indians that it is his
