218 Proceedings of the Council of Maryland, 1678-1679.
Lib. R. of severall English to their charge whereof they were alto-
gether Innocent, and did hope his Lspp did soe beleive of
them, then what answer his Lspp: would give thereunto.
Whereupon It was considered and advised that for answer his
Lspp: would please to tell them, that certain it was some Eng-
lish had been killed, and whither or noe any of their Indians
were guilty of the murdr themselves knew better then pos-
sibly we might, that if they did know the psons that com-
mitted the same his Lspp: did not at all question but they
would deliver them up According to their Articles wth us.
The Emperor & his great men being come and with them
Azazames & Manahawton his Lspp enters into further con-
sultation with his Councell before such time as they Admitt
p. 61 of the Indians. Was then proposed by his Lspp to the Coun-
cell whither it might not be convenient to apprehend Azaz-
ames and Manahawton, two Indians guilty of the murdr com-
mitted at the head of Pottuxen River (as by severall Indian
Evidences & other Substantiall circumstances relateing there-
unto it had appeared especially they being none of the great
men neither were they sent for, and therefore came not undr
colour of the publick faith.
Wch being putt to the vote it was carried in the affirmative
and it is resolved that the Emperor & great men together
with Azazames & Manahawson be sent for in altogether, and
that his Lspp: pceed to treate with them according to the
result of the Councell at the last meeteing, And that in fine his
Lspp: plainly tell them, that he was sufficiently sensible of the
murdr committed on Daniel Conningham and his ffamily at
the head of Pottuxen River in Augt last, as also of the persons
that committed it whom he now saw before his face, and
therefore his Lspp: did not doubt but they would Deliver them
up According to their Articles, if they expected to be pro-
tected by him, Wch if they should Deny or refuse to doe it
was the Opinion of the Councell that his Lspp: might justly
cause them to be secured.

& Manahowton being Accordingly sent for. Come in
The Chancelor is Desired to read to the Interpreter Major
Boareman the severall pticulars of the Councells result in
ordr to this conference the last meeteing wch the Interpreter
accordingly delivers to the Indians with wch they seeme to be
very well satisfied, And make their Request to his Lspp for a
Supply of Armes and Ammunition great pt of their Armes
being taken in a late Rencounter betweene them and the Sen-
niquos and Susqrs The Interpreter being ordrd to ask them
what Quantity they had occasion for they made answer that
they referred that to his Lspp: To wch his Lspp: was pleased by
