his Interpreter to lett them know that According to his
League made with them he alwaies was & still is ready to
assist them upon all occasions both for their owne Support
and against their Enemies, wch as his Lspp: had assured them
of soe he expected the like reciprocall ffriendship from them
towards his Lspp: and the English undr his Governmt To wch
they answer that they doe confess and acknowledge his Lspp
has truly preserved his League with them and kept the
Articles, And that for their pts they know none but the Susqr
that have broken them.
The Chancelor hath in charge from his Lspp: by the Inter-
preter to tell them that the Lord Propry had sent for them to
see them and had heard what they had to say, but now he
thought fitt to say something else to them (viz:) that his Lspp
and the People of this Province undr his Governmt have
allwaies firmly observed and kept the peace with them. But
wee know some of their Indians have not kept the peace
with him. There was Conningham his Wife and her Bror
killed at the head of Pottuxen, Wee certainly know who killed
Lib. R.
them, And my Lord now sees two of them here, and there-
fore he is forced to speake which he did not intend to doe at
this time, but seeing them now before his face he Demands
the Emperor to deliver them up According to the Articles,
that Azazams and Manahawton are the two psons wch his Lspp:
did Demand.
To wch they answer they know nothing of it and say that
none of their Indians had done any mischiefe to the English
since his Lspps Departure. Whereunto the Interpreter was
ordred to reply that certain it was the murder was Committed
& that we did as certainly know those two psons already
named and demanded to be guilty, wch God had soe ordred
by preserving the life of the Woman soe long as to reveale
the same, and that therefore his Lspp did again Demand the
Delivery of them up if they expected we should continue
peace with them, and further that there was yett a third pson
wch his Lspp did likewise expect should be delivered up when
they should be required soe to Doe, that his Lspp: had not
designed to have made this Demand now but that he saw the
murderers now before his face expecting that they would vol-
untarily of themselves have delivered them up According to
their Articles.
To all wch the Emperor and great men plead ignorance still
affirming that they know nothing of it.
The Interpreter was then ordred to lett them know that
although his Lspp was very well Satisfied that Azazams and
Manahawton then prsent were guilty of the murdr and might
justly be apprehended for the same yett his Lspp was unwill-
