thereon have thought fitt (for the security and Defence of the
Inhabitants from any further attempts and assaults of Indians,
and for the better discovery of any fforreigne Indians which
the Pascattaway Our Neighbour Indians doe alleadge have
committed the said murdr) that yor Troope be commanded
fforth to range the upper pts of yor County and towards the
Branches of Pottuxen River according to such Ordrs and
instructions as you should from time to time receive from me
I doe therefore hereby will and require as also strictly charge
and command you Capt Randolph Brandt forthwith to sum-
mon yor Troope to meete at some convenient place in yor
County where you shall think fitt. Out of wch you are to
make choice of Twenty men to be well provided with Armes
Ammunition and provision sufficient for a weekes March with
whom you are to march directly to the Pascattoway ffort and
acquaint the Indians there that you are not come with any
Designe to hurt or annoy them, but are ordred forth with yor
men to keepe rangeing for the security of yor County from
the assault of any fforreigne Indians, and to make what Dis-
covery you can of Our and their Enemies, wch when you have
endeavoured topswade them, you are to goe forward towards
the Susquahannoh ffort, and soe to range towards the
Branches of Pottuxen and in such other pts and places of yor
County as are more obnoxious to the attempts of Indians, and
most proper for discovery, and at the End of yor weeke you
are to returne home with the said ptyof men and your Self or
Lievetenant againe to march out with a fresh pty of yor Troope
consisting of the like number of men and alike provided as
before, soe to continue rangeing, One pty weekely releiving
another untill further Ordrs from me or from my Self and his
Lib. R.
Ldpps: Councell and you are from time to time (when and as
often as occasion shall require) to rendr me an Accot of yor
proceedings, and what Discovery you shall make. Whereof
faile not and for yor soe Doing this shall be yor sufficient War-
rant. Given at my house at Manahowicks Neck in Wiccoco-
mico River undr my hand and Seale this Twentieth Day of
August in the third yeare of his Ldpps; Dominion over this
Province &c. Annoq Domini 1678:

A Lettr was also sent from the Governor to Capt Ninion
Beale at the head of Pottuxen River requireing him to con-
tinue his rangeing and follow those ordrs formerly sent him
for the guarding those pts and care taken for the tending the
Cropps of those that were employed in that Service, by the
following ordr

raised for the guard & Defence of the frontires at the head of
