English and they haveing alwayes been One (as they say)
that they were Sensible and did then acknowledge the
English had been their greatest ffriends by whose aid and
assistance and undr whose protection they had hitherto sub-
sisted, that they very well knew they had many Enemies, and
the English onely their ffriends whom they could depend on,
and if Once they should breake with them, they must cer-
tainly be most miserable expecting nothing but Death that as
touching the murdr & the demand of the English thereupon
they could at prsent give noe positive answer as not being yett
sensible who were the murderers, that they will make it their
Business to find out the truth and make strict inquisition
amongst all their young men endeavouring what in them lies
to find out the murderers, that on Tuesday the 27th instant
they will rendr an Accot of their proceedings & give their
further answer to what has been offered to them this day, wch
time being concluded on the Councell are ordrd to meete
again at the same place Tuesday the 27th August 1678 :

August the 20th 1678:
Prsent as Before
Ordered that the men raised for the guard and Defence of
Inhabitants at the head of Pottuxen River continue still in
Service, and that the Anne Arrundel and Charles County
Troopes be commanded forth to keepe rangeing & to secure
the heads of the Rivers & other convenient places on the
ffrontires of their respective Counties according to such ordrs
and instructions as they shall receive from the Governor
A Letter was accordingly sent from the Governor to Ltt
Coll. Thomas Tailler of Anne Arrundell County with ordrs to
keepe his Troope rangeing upon the ffrontires and other con-
venient places of the County untill further Ordrs
And the following Precept sent to Cap: Randolph Brandt
in Charles County viz.

Thomas Notley Esqr Ltt Genll Chiefe Captain & chiefe Gov-
ernor of the Province of Maryland undr the Rtt Honble Charles
Lord and Propry of the same &ca to Capt Randolph Brandt
Capta of a Troope of Horse in Charles County Greeteing.
Whereas there is a Barbarous murdr lately committed upon
three English Inhabitants of this Province p some Indians not
yett fully discovered which my self and his Ldpps Councell
haveing taken into our serious consideration & consulted
