154 Proceedings of the Council of Maryland, 1676-1678.
Lib. R. R. yeares liberty to make good rights for the said land, paying to
his Lordpp only the Rent of two shillings sterl yearely for
every hundred acres And further itt is Ordered That those
that seat nearest the Hoarkills shall have out of the said
Eight thousand acres One thousand acres of land for a
ffamily, haveing in itt three working hands att the least And
p. 123 the rest of the Eight thousand acres to be proportioned out
att five hundred acres each ffamily haveing in itt two worke-
ing hands att the least Provided such as intend to seat thence
shall settle betwixt this tyme & the last of Novembr next &
there build & not desert their Plantacons And itt is further
ordered, that att the returne of Col Henry Coursey from New
Yorke a letter be sent to the Governour of New Yorke to
know whether those persons who have Incroached upon his
Lordpps Province doe own him for their Governour, that there
may be a right understanding betwixt the two Govermnts

A Proclamacon

Taking into serious consideracon the great & notorious
abuses & profanations of the Sabbath day by unlawfull
Assemblyes of divers the Inhabitants of this Province on that
day meeting together to drinke tipple & game to the great
dishonour of Almighty God the discredit of Christianity
debauch of youth, the encrease & Encouragmt of all vice &
oftentymes tending to the breach of his Lordps peace to the
disturbance of other well disposed Inhabitants, For prvencon
whereof for the future I doe hereby (by & with the advice &
consent of his Lordps Councell) strictly charge & comand all
& singuler his Lordps Justices of the peace Sheriffes Con-
stables & other publick Ministers within this Province to take

p. 126 due Cognizance of the same within their severall & respective
prcincts And that to the utmost of their power they proceed to
put in due Execucon the Lawes made against such abuses
and profanation of the Sabbath day as aforesaid, strictly will-
ing & requiring all Constables according to their Office att
every County Court in the County where they live to make
due prsentmt of all & every the Offenders in such cases As
also of all unlawfull meetings & Assemblyes of people mett
together on purpose to drink tipple & debauch as well on any
other the week dayes as on the Sabbath day And the Justices
of the peace of each respective County are also hereby
required to make strict Inquisicon into all such Offences comitted
or done in the Countyes where they reside, And to binde
over all & every the person & persons so offending to the
good behaviour & to make his or their appearance att the
