lately desired to come to a treaty of Peace with his said Lord-
shipp, and have (as I am informed) since the said Overture
Submitted themselves to and putt themselves undr the protec-
tion of the Cinnigo's or some other nation of Indians reside-
ing to the northward of this Province, & within or neer unto
the Territoryes of his Royall Highnesse the Duke of Yorke.
Know yee That I have constituted Ordeined appointed and
authorized as I doe hereby constitute, ordaine appoint &
authorize Henry Coursey Esqr One of his Lopps Councell for
this Province as Embassadour or Envoy to treate with & con-
clude a firme peace with the said Susquesahannoughs Cinni-
gos or any other Indians now unknowne to us inhabiteing or
resideing to the Northward of us within or without the Terri-
tories of his said Royall Highnesse, and from whom Wee
have already received injury or may hereafter reasonably sus-
pect Wee may receive injury by the confederacy betweene
them and the said Susquesahannoughs, upon such reasonable
termes as to him shall seeme meet & convenient according to
his instructions; And fforasmuch as the said Indians doe now
reside for the most part within the Territory of his said Royall
Highnesse, or at least cannot be treated with but by a journey
to be had through his said Highnesses Territory I doe hereby
constitute Ordaine appoint & authorize the said Henry
Coursey to treate with Edmund Andross Esqr Seigneur of
Sausurez Leivtenant & Governour Generall under his Royall
Highnesse James Duke of Yorke & Albany &c of all his Ter-
ritoryes in America, and to desire leave to passe through the
said Territory under his Govermt to the treaty with the
Indians aforesaid, and to request his assistance in the pcure-
ing of a firme peace for all his Maties Subjects in his Maties
Collony of Virginia as well as for those of this province with
the Indians aforesaid Wherefore I doe request that the afore-

said Henry Coursey (according to the Law of Nations may be
received, creditted, and beleived, promiseing to ratifie con-
firme & approve whatsoever shall be done by him in the
prmisses according to this my Comission as if it were done by
my Selfe Given at St Maries under my hand and the great
Seale of this province this thirtith day of April in the second
yeare of his Lopps Dominion Annoq Dom. 1677.
Instructions for Coll Henry Coursey in Execution of his

imprimis you are with all convenient Speed to begin yr jour-
ney towards New Yorke, by the way of Newcastle upon Dela-
