You are hereby Desired as also in their Majestys Names
straightly Willed and Required upon sight hereof to attend
Coll Casparus Herman & Thomas Blake Gent jointly &
severally Commissionated Authorised and Empowred to dis-
course and treat with the strange Indians lately seated on the

Liber K.

said Hermans Land & to Officiate as Interpreter between
them and said Indians if Occasion shall Require or they shall
think fit to employ you therein according to such Orders and
directions as they shall give you also to Come with them
down to St Marys at their Return thence for all which you
shall be duly satisfied & for the same this shall be *your war-
rant Dated at the Councill Chamber at the City of St Marys
the day & Year abovesaid

The Alarm lately received from Cecil County by the Coming
thither of a Parcell of strange Indians to seat upon Coll Her-
mans land with many more expected hath put us upon Con-
sulting of the most proper and effectual measures to be taken
for the securing the Inhabitants and preventing if Possible
any Violence or Injuries to be offered them by the said Indians
or others making Incursions upon us one necessary expedient
we thought to be the securing the Frontiers and having 3
Forts Erected for Communication and ranging all along the
outward parts constantly between one and the other for dis-
covery each fort to be manned with a Captain and Nine Soul-
diers and four Indians under his Command for the Compleat-
ing whereof it is thought fitt that you be & you are hereby
advised and desired to treat with the Emperor of Nantecoke
and demand of him Six Men of his to serve in at that Affair
as his Proportion of the charge having taken the same Course
with the Emperor of Pascattoway for his part you are also to
put him in mind of his League and the Preservation thereof by
complying with his Yearly acknowledgment or Tribute accord-
ing to Articles Care is also taken to treat with those Indians
at the head of the Bay as Friends if such they appear & to

men to Come down to the Governor if otherwise to Seize the
French Man and all such as shall thereupon assist him or
