a friendly & amicable manner to Come and treat according to
the Tenor of the said Commission then you are to use your
utmost endeavrs by way of Stratagem or otherwise to suprize
and take the said Frenchman by himself & secure him by such
ways and means as you and the said Coll Herman in your
discretions shall think most safe and proper for that end and
Purpose to be Conveyed brought down with all speed to the
City of St Marys as aforesaid
5 But if after all you shall find that you Cannot Prevail
with the said Frenchman to come by fair means nor Suprize
& take him by Stratagem as aforesaid then & no otherwise
you are to Produce to the said Herman that other Commission
from me to him directed & herewith delivered you Impowering
and Commanding him by Force of Arms to apprehend Seize
and take the said French Man and to oppose fight vanquish
persue kill and destroy all such as shall oppose him therein,
or thereupon offer any Violence injury or Damage to any the
Inhabitants of this Province
6 In all which Cases you are also to discourse consult and
advise .with Mr William Harris Mr Charles Iames & such other
of the Gentlemen in Commission there as you shall think fitt
& Inform your self the best you can of the true Nature Quality
& Nation of those Indians their Pretence & just Occasion of
Coming there together also with the manner of their Behaviour
since their arrivall & what injuries (if any) they have done &
what proofs can be made thereof which you are to Provide
your self with and bring down with you to make good the
same against them particularly one Robert Drury whose
Deposition hath appeared this day before the Councill Board
together with what other Evidences testimonies and proofs

with you Captain Iacob Young of Cecil County the antient
Interpreter formerly & generally employed by the Govern-
ment of this Province in such Cases of treating with Foreign
Indians
To Enquire also for one Thompson who hath made
Affidavit in relation to the Premises, and if to be had to Call
him before you and if any thing you find from his Examination
material to bind him to Come down with you
Given under my hand and Seal this Ninth day of
