Cecil County is hereby also desired and required to attend
the same as an Interpreter And further the said Coll Her-
man and Thomas Blake are to observe and follow such other
and further Orders Instructions and directions in relation to
the Premises or any part thereof as he or they shall receive
from his Excellency the Governor himself or this Board Con-
cerning the same
Given at the Councill Chamber at the City of St Marys the
9th day of March Anno Domini 1692 In the fifth Year of the
Reign of our Sovereign Lord and Lady King William &

Lionel Copley Esqr Captain Generall & Governor in chief
in and over this their Majestys Province and Territory of
Maryland to Coll Casparus Herman of Cecil County Greeting
Whereas by an Order of Councill dated this day you
together wth Mr Thomas Blake of Calvert County have been
Iointly and severally Commissionated authorised and em-
powred to treat with a pty of Strange Foreign Indians lately
come and seated at the head of the Bay in your County, and
on your Land as is Informed & to endeavour by all fair means
and civill treatment imaginable to Invite and Perswade the
French man and some other of the Chief Men Indians among
them to come down and enter into a League of Peace and
Amity with this Government as in such Cases as is usuall and
as they pretend to desire You are therefore hereby strictly
charged and commanded accordingly to use all Civill treat-
ment towards the said Indians and endeavour by all the fair
means and good words imaginable to invite the said French
man and two or three others of their great men to Come
down Voluntarily to St Marys in order to treat with me, or
with me and the Councill touching a League of Peace and
Amity to be setled and Concluded on betwixt us, but in case
they shall refuse to come upon such Invitations as aforesaid
or shall thereupon offer to remove or fly from the Parts where
they are seated and thereby appear to be Enemies under a
disguise of friendship designing mischief as is much doubted
and suspected then you are further hereby authorised and
empowred charged and Commanded forthwith to suprize and
privately secure if Possible or otherwise by force of Arms
to Apprehend seize and take the said French man and
with all speed Convey him under a safe convenient and
sufficient Guard to the City of St Marys there to receive
further orders Concerning him and also to Cause the Militia
of your County under your Command well & Compleatly
Armed and provided to be ready to an Hours warning to
