at Charles County, as also with the Kings of Mattawoman
and Choptico for two of their Indians (vizt) each of them one
for the Fort in Ann Arund" and that a Letter be likewise writ
to Collo Charles Hutchins of Dorset County acquainting him
with the proceedings of this Board for the safeguard and
security of the Inhabitants of this Province & the Indians our
Friends desiring and empowring him also to treat with and

engage the Emperor of Nantecoke to afford and assist us with

six of his Indians (vizt) two for the Fort in Ann Arundell and
four for that of Baltemore County the said Indians to be
relieved & their Places to be supplyed with others from time

to time as as the said Emperors and Kings to whom they
respectively belong shall think fit the said Indians are likewise
to be employ'd in Hunting and Killing Deer and other Game
for the use and accommodation of the Forts to which they
shall Respectively be assign'd and to be paid for the same
ready down at the Fort in Match Coats to be provided for
that Purpose at the usuall & common rate as they are allowed
in other places where they have used to hunt or be employed
Proposed by his Excellency and he demands the opinion &
advice of this Board what further measures to be taken in
relation to those strange Indians seated on Mr Hermans Land
with that French man represented and suspected to be Monsr
Casteene the grand Enemy of the English that has been so
active in Cutting of and destroying their Majestys Subjects
and their Estates in New England &ca
Resolved and Ordered that a Sloop or Shallop be forthwith
provided and sent up the Bay under the Conduct and man-
agement of some discreet judicious able Person to be author-
ised & empowred to treat with Coll Herman and consult him
of the best means and methods to be used to invite and per-
swade the said French man together with some of the Great
Men of those Indians to Come down and enter into the league
of peace and amity they Pretend to desire with us and in Case
they shall refuse so to do then that the said Herman do make
use of such Commission and Instructions as shall be to him
for that Purpose be Directed for the taking by force the said
French man and bringing him away in the said sloop or
shallop
Resolved further that Mr Thomas Blake of Calvert County
be the Person pitched upon and made choice of by this Board
& to be accordingly Authorised and Impowred by his Excel-
lency the Govr to manage the said Affair in Consulting with
Collo Herman as above and to have with him the abovesd
Commsn & Instructions from his Excellency to the said Her-
man to be made use of upon occasion as before
