To his Excellency the Governor & the honourable Councill
The petition of Robt Carse late high Sheriff
of St Marys County
humbly sheweth
That your Petitioner in the month of Ianuary last being then
Sheriff did by virtue of his Office seize and take in Execution
a Negro Man of Madam Elizabeth Calverts for and at the
suit of Mr Iohn Rogers Merchant in Plymouth which said
Negro did run away and make his escape from your Petr and
notwithstandg all the Industry and diligence he could and did
use could not retreive the said Negro during the whole time
of his Sheriffaldry he humbly prays your Excellencys order or
precept for there taking the said Negro whereby to render the
same according to the tenor of his Writ and be indemnified
from any advantage to be taken against him for the same
And he shall pray &ca

Which petition was granted and accordingly issued this foll
precept (vizt)

By his Excellency the Govr & the honble Counc11 Novr 18th 1692
Whereas Robert Carse Gent late high Sheriff of the County
of St Marys hath Complained to this Board, that having by
vertue of his Office in the time of his Sheriffaldry and in the
month of Ianuary last seized and taken in Execution a Negro
Man of Madam Elizabeth Calverts upon a Iudgment obtained
by Mr Iohn Rogers Merchant in Plymouth against the said
Elizabeth Calvert, the said Negro by instigation and Advice of
some Persons made his Escape and fled from his Custody, and
is harboured and lyeth lurking about the plantation of the said

Calvert and other private places where the said Carse could
not possibly or conveniently come at him to retreive him
during the whole time of his Sheriffaldry wherefore he hath
humbly prayed the order of this Board to the present Sheriff
of the said County to apprehend and take into his Custody
the said Negro to render and satisfy the Iudgment obtained
by the said Rogers against the said Calvert according to Law
Ordered that Robert Mason Gent now high Sheriff of sd
County or his Deputy do with such Force and by such ways
and means as he snail think most fit and convenient forthwith
apprehend seize and take into his custody the said Negro and
him safe keep so as to have him before their Majestys Iustices
of the County Court of St Marys County to satisfy to the said
Rogers in manner & form according to the Precept formerly
directed to the said Robt Carse and by which he did take the
said Negro in Execution as aforesaid
