nominate and appoint, and I do hereby in their Majestys
Names by and with the Advice and consent of their Majestys
Councill here nominate and appoint thursday next the 13th
Instant to be a day set apart kept and solemnized at the City
of St Marys, thursday following the 20th Instant within and
through the County of St Marys and thursday next after fol-
lowing the 27th Instant generally in and throughout the rest of
the Province, which respective days in the respective Counties
and places aforesaid all and singular the Majistrates & Officers
civill and Military and all others their Majestys Subjects therein
Inhabiting, residing or being are straightly enjoyned charged
and commanded to Solemnize, set apart and keep as days of
publick rejoycing and thanksgiving to Almighty God for so
great a blessing, not only by rendering unto him all due Hon-
ours glory and praise in their most solemn and serious devo-
tions and religious Exercise, but also by using such other out-
ward and publick decent demonstrations and expressions of
Ioy and Gratitude as upon such great and solemn occasions
hath been usual and practical in all Parts of the Christian
World: and I do hereby in their Majestys Names straightly
prohibit and forbid, all Masters of familys Mistresses Dames
or Overseers or others whatsoever within this Province to
work or use any Servile or Bodily Labour themselves, or suffer
or permit their Children, Servants, Slaves or others under
their charge and tuition so to do on the respective days afore-
said to be kept and Solemnized within their respective Coun-
ties and places aforesaid as they will answer the Contrary at
their peril, and on pain of being severely Proceeded against

for their contempt, and to the end the same may the better be
published and made known, and that none may plead or pre-
tend Ignorance herein I do in their Majestys name further
straightly charge and command, all and singular the respec-
tive Sheriffs of this Province forthwith upon receipt hereof to
make publick Proclamation hereof in the most publick and
convenient places within their respective Counties: Given at
the City of Saint Marys under the Great Seal of this Province
of Maryland the sixth day of Octr in the fourth year of their
Majestys Reign &ca Anno Domini 1692

Stephen Sumpter of Calvert County publick Post appointed
humbly moves the Board by his Petition for further allowance
then has yet been made him for his Officiating therein the
Committee not having Sufficiently allowed him for the same
The Committee appointed for laying of the Publick levy
being sent for make their, appearance are made acquainted
with the Complaint of Stephen Sumpter, they say that he
