sons having just complaints against any sub Rangers shall be
heard and that noe person as they tender their welfare doe

presume to Act and doe in the buisines of Ranging in the
least manner without Lycence from the aforesaid cheife Rang-
ers under their hands and seales, and the severall Sheriffs of
this Province are hereby required to make publick proclamacon
hereof in the most publick place of their respectives Countyes
Given & Dated the 9th July 1688.

To all people to whom these presents shall come wee the
Cofnissioners for manageing and causing to be levyed and
collected his Majties customes, subsidies and other duties in this
his Kingdome of England send Greeting Know ye that wee
the said Commissioners by virtue of an Act of Parliament
made in the 25th yeare of his Majties reign Entituled an Act for
the Encouragement of the Eastland and Greenland trades and
for the better secureing the Plantacon Trade and in pursuiance
of the Authority and direccon to be given by the Right honoble
the Lord High Treasurer of England Have deputed and im-
powred and doe hereby depute and impower George Layfeild
to be comptroller and surveyor of all the rates, duties and Im-
posicons arriseing and growing due to his Majty in his Prov-
ince of Maryland by virtue of the said Act whereby he hath
power to enter into any ship bottome boate or other vessell as
also into any shop house warehouse hostery or other place
whatsoever to make dilligent search into any trunck packcase
chest trusse or any other parcell or package whatsoever for
any goods wares or merchandizes prohibited to be Exported
or Imported or whereof the Customes or other duties have not
been duely paid and the same to seize to his Majties use as also
to put in Execucon all other the lawfull powers and Authori-
ties for the better mannageing and collecting the said duties
in all things proceeding as the Law directs Hereby praying
and requiring all and every his Majties Officers and ministers
and all others whome it may concerne to be ayding and assist-
ing to him in all things as becometh Given under our hands
and Seale at the Custome house London This nineteenth day
of March. And by the power above to me Graunted by these
presents doe nominate appoynt constitute and depute you
Andrew Abbington of Calvert County in the province afore-
said Gent: to be my Lawfull depty Comptr and surveyor for the
port of patuxent district and all Rivers and Creeks there-
unto belonging and to doe and performe all and every Act
and Acts thing and things to the said office or place of a
Depty Comptrollr and surveyor belonging or apperteyning and
which might be lawfully done & performed by me by virtue
of the aforesaid Comissions and of the said Act of Parliament
