Proceedings upon the tryall of Woodcock,

Mason Burleigh and Alyewood upon the
Death of Mr Paine.
Maryland ss.
To all Sherriffs & Chiefe Officers & Magistrates Millitary &
Civill and all others their Majties subjects Inhabitants of this
Province of Maryland Greeting whereas upon the Informacon
& advice of a late Barbarous horrid Murder perpetrated &
Committed by some Papiste Confederates with Majr Nicholas
Sewall one of the late depute Governors of this Province on
the body of Mr Iohn Paine his Majties Collecf for Potuxon dis-
trict within this Province in the Execucon of his Office humbly
recommended & offered to the paternall Princely Consideration
of his most Sacred Majtie Our Soveraign Lord William by the
grace of God King of England Scottland France & Ireland—
Defender of the Faith &c by the humble peticon of Sr William
Paine brother to the said Iohn Paine in London His said Majtie
out of his zealous & pious inclination to Iustice and to have
the Murderers brought to condign punishment according to
Law hath thought fitt to Signifie his Royall pleasure and
Especiall Commande to this Governmt. under the notion &
name of such as for the time being take care for preserving
the peace and Administring the Lawes within this his Majties
Province of Maryland requireing them to bring the Murderers
or Malefactors concerned in the said Murder to Tryall &
Speedy Iustice as by his Majties Commissionary Lettr of the
26th of Aprill last directed as afd relacon being there unto had
more fully and at large it doth & may appeare. And whereas
furthermore severall other persons papists and popishly
affected & Evily inclined for want of a due Settlemt within
this Province and a qualified authority (as they conceive or
conjecture within themselves) to curb their insolences have
out of their wicked & Mallitious rebellious & Treasonable
inclinations & designes to disturb the present peace and Tran-
quility of their Majties Subjects here Endeavoured and still
do persevere and Continue to raise up mutiny & Sedition
amongst them in Opposition to the present Governmt by
uttering divulgeing & Spreading abroad severall false mutin-
ous Scandalous & rebellious Speeches papers & pamphletts
by them contrived & procured to terrify & amuse the good
people of this province and divert them from their naturall
allegiance to their Majties & Obedience to the present Gov-
ernmt by his Majties Royall Authority here Established in open
Opposition to & violation of the good & wholesome Lawes of
England & of this province in such Cases made & provided
In Obedience therefore & pursuant as well to his Majties said
Commands before recited & Expressed as also to prevent the
