Order of the Convention for the tryall of
Woodcock for the murder of Paine.
By the Convention Aprill 16th
1691.
Upon severall readings in the house of his Majties Letter
Commission and dated the 26th of Aprill last and directed to
such as for the time being take care for the preserving the
peace and administring the Lawes within this his Majestys
Province of Maryland &c. now lately reed from the honbles their
Majties Depty Governr of Virga and upon full and mature delib-
eration and consideration had of the contents thereof, and of
his Majties express Comands therin signified and sett forth.
Resolved that the most proper and Effectual meanes
and Method to comply therewith and to put the same
in Execution as also to curb & putt a stop to the inso-
lency and exorbitant rude behaviour practice and
attempts of their Majties enemies within this Province
to disturb the peace & quiet thereof, is by way of Ordi-
nance or Commission to issue from this house for the
Opening, Erecting, and appointing of a Provinciall or
Superior Court of Iustice within this Province as well
for the tryall and condemnation or acquittall of the
murderers of Mr Iohn Payne pursuant to his Majties
pticular and express commands in the said Letter, as
also for the holding hearing and determining of all
pleas relating to the conservation of their Majties peace
and the peace of the Province and their Majties rights &
revenues within the same together with all other pleas
formerly used or accustomed to be held in the sd Pro-
vinciall Court (matters only relating to probate of Wills
&c. already granted to and within the congnisance of
the County Courts & matters relating to Titles of
Land excepted.
Ordered that Commission be accordingly drawn and issue
to Nehemiah Blakiston Esqre Chiefe Iustice, Coll Henry Iowles
Coll George Robotham, Majr Nicholas Greenberry, Mr Thomas
Tench, Majr Robt King, Docf Iohn Brooke Coll Nicholas
Gassaway, Mr Iohn Edmondson, MrIohn Adison & Mr Robert
Mason, Iustices of the said Court thereby to be Authorised
constituted and appointed
