Family, Property & Speculative Mania in the Formation of the Early Republic

(engraving of Georgetown and Federal city by T. Cartwright after G. Beck, 1801, Library of Congress)

The following tentative schedule is subject to change as the semester progresses. Check this page and the links from it periodically. The format for class time prior to the submittal of the first paper will be a discussion of the reading and then open discussion of progress on papers, covering any technical and substantive research issues that might arise. The presentation sessions after the first essay is due (October 27) are meant to be demonstrations of work in progress and discussion of any aspect of the process of researching and writing the final paper that the presenter would like to raise. Following the discussion of the reading for the day, each seminar participant on the assigned day will present the progress to date on his or her final paper, using the projector and the instructor's computer, and working off his or her Geocities web site. To be on the safe side, all presentations should also be maintained on floppy disks ('A' drive) which will serve as a backup in case the web is not accessible.
