BACKGROUND

The Maryland State Advisory Committee to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights was established in accordance with the federal Civil Rights Act of 1957 (sec. 105(c)). Since 1957, the Committee has advised the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights about discrimination or denial of equal protection of the law based on race, color, religion, sex, age, disability, or national origin, including voting rights violations. The Committee also keeps the U.S. Commission informed about the administration of justice in Maryland (P.L. 98-183).

Although the Committee has no enforcement authority, it refers civil rights complaints to appropriate federal agencies.
