ORIGIN & FUNCTIONS


DEPARTMENT OF PARKS & RECREATION

The Department of Parks and Recreation originated as the Parks Division, but reorganized as the Parks and Public Landings Division under the Public Works Department. In 2015, it was renamed the Department of Parks and made a separate department. In March 2018, the Department was reformed as the Department of Parks and Recreation.

The Department is responsible for the organization and conduct of County recreation programs, and the development, operation, and maintenance of County parks and recreational facilities (Code Local Government Article, secs. 1-601 through 1-611; County Code, secs. 22-1 through 22-30).

RECREATION DIVISION
Formerly the Department of Parks and Recreation, the Recreation Division became a separate unit placed under the Department of Community Services on March 1, 2011. The Division was transferred to the reformed Department of Parks and Recreation in March 2018.
