Some functions of the Maryland Outdoor Learning Partnership originated in June 2017, when the Project Green Classrooms Initiative was formd by the Governor (Executive Order 01.01.2017.12). In April 2024, authorization for the Initiative was rescinded, when the Governor replaced the Initiative and expanded its duties by creating the Maryland Outdoor Learning Partnership (Executive Order 01.01.2024.15).
The Maryland Outdoor Learning Partnership works to enable Maryland youth to meaningfully access the environment and grow as environmentally literate stewards who access nature and are equipped with skills that empower them to act to conserve and restore Maryland's natural resources. To these ends, the Partnership reviews current environmental and climate change education efforts in Maryland; engages with networks to ensure that environmental education is equitably implemented and sustainably funded across Maryland; and supports State leadership in the implementation and tracking of relevant Chesapeake Bay Program priorities.
Meeting monthly, the Partnership fosters collaboration, coordinates resources, and makes recommendations to equitably ensure that:
Representatives of State government agencies and private associations concerned with the environment and learning constitute the Partnership. The Secretary of Natural Resources and the State Superintendent of Schools serve as Co-Chairs.
