In 2009, the Cancer Surveillance Committee was convened by the State Council on Cancer Control.
Goals and priorities of the Cancer Surveillance System were set by the State Council on Cancer Control through its Cancer Surveillance Committee, which met on an ad hoc basis. The System collects data on incidence, diagnostic stage, mortality, and risk factors for cancer. Through the Maryland Cancer Registry Advisory Committee, the System also uses the Maryland Cancer Registry as a tool to plan, evaluate, and target cancer control programs.
Four times a year, the Committee met, one of its meetings regularly was a joint meeting with the Maryland Cancer Registry Advisory Committee.
The Committee has not met since 2012. Since then, the Committee's main functions have been assumed by the Center for Cancer Prevention and Control along with the Cancer Registry Advisory Committee.
