In July 2011, the Southern Maryland Higher Education Council was established (Chapter 622, Acts of 2011). The Council was to develop a strategy to improve access to higher education for Southern Maryland residents. The Council examined existing needs for higher education in the region and determined whether those needs were being met. The Council recommended ways to meet any additional higher education needs, and formulate long- and short-term plans to improve access to higher education in Southern Maryland.
The Council submitted its interim report to the Governor and General Assembly on January 21, 2013, and its final report on December 2, 2013.
Authorization for the Council ended June 30, 2014 (Chapter 346, Acts of 2013).
