In July 2013, the Task Force to Study a Post-Labor Day Start Date for Maryland Public Schools formed (Chapter 336, Acts of 2013).

The Task Force studied what impact changing the school start date to follow Labor Day would have on summer tourism and Maryland's economy. Its effect on local school systems with regard to the academic calendar, planning, administration, and facility use also was considered.

In June 2014, the Task Force submitted its report to the Governor and General Assembly.

Authorization for the Task Force ended June 30, 2014.
