In June 2017, the Prince George's County Surcharge Exemptions for Projects Near Transit Properties Work Group formed (Chapter 455, Acts of 2017).

Currently, Prince George's County collects a school facilities surcharge on certain types of new residential construction. Collected upon issuance of a building permit, this fee is used towards new school construction in the County.

The Work Group was charged first to collect data on how citizens have benefited from reductions or exemptions to either the school facilities or public safety surcharge. Second, the Work Group studied the impact of retaining existing exemptions to the surcharges for transit-related development, and expanding exemptions to the surcharges for development related to Purple Line Metro stations or MARC stations. Finally, the Work Group evaluated the potential value and cost to increase, decrease, or otherwise change the surcharge exemptions for transit-related development.

In December 2017, the Work Group submitted its report to the Prince George's County Delegation, the Prince George's County Council, and the Prince George's County Board of Education.

Authorization for the Work Group ended June 30, 2018.
