In June 2008, the Task Force on Educational Issues Affecting Military Children was established (Chapters 402 & 403, Acts of 2008). The Task Force was to identify and examine educational issues that affect the children of military families, and what Maryland currently does to help such children transition into State schools. The Task Force recommended ways to improve the process for military children entering Maryland schools. Among its considerations were: ensuring credit is received for previously completed work; speeding up the necessary paperwork; how State graduation requirements affect the opportunity of such children to graduate on time; issues affecting children with disabilities transitioning into Maryland schools; and how participation in extracurricular activities for children in military families is impacted. Finally, the Task Force considered whether Maryland should join the Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunities for Military Children.

The Task Force submitted its final report to the Governor and General Assembly in January 2009. Authorization for the Task Force ended May 31, 2009.
