In July 2019, the Work Group to Study Shelter and Supportive Services for Unaccompanied Homeless Minors formed by the General Assembly (Chapter 553, Acts of 2019).

The Work Group charge was to gather information on unaccompanied homeless youth and study their unique needs, while identifying what public and private sector resources are currently available to meet those needs. Further, the Work Group was to pinpoint gaps in those resources; identify barriers for accessing safe shelter; and study shelter practices in other states for unaccompanied homeless youth.

Next, the Work Group recommended changes in policy, legislation, and regulations that better provide for the needs of unaccompanied homeless youth. Recommendations on budget priorities and funding mechanisms to meet those needs also were proposed by the Work Group.

Authorization for the Work Group ended June 30, 2020.
