Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, March 10, 1955. Attended Fox Chapel Area High School, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Medill School of Journalism, Northwestern University, B.S. (journalism), 1977. Former journalist. President, Newspaper Guild, 1995-2008 (secretary-treasurer, 1993-95). Vice-President, Communications Workers of America, 1995-2008. Chair, Montgomery County Democratic State Central Committee (member, 2018-). Past president, Berger-Marks Foundation. Member, International Federation of Journalists; Northwestern University Council of 100; Fox Hills Civic Association. Former member, Board of Directors, Tallyho Swim and Tennis Club. Maryland Senior Olympics (swimming), 2017-. U.S. Masters swimmer. Hall of Achievement, Medill School of Journalism, 2006. Alumni Merit Award, Northwestern University, 2007.
