A Tour of the Exhibition in Government House

Works of art from the state's Peabody Collection are on exhibit in three public rooms of Government House through December of 1998. Maryland's Government House, located in historic downtown Annapolis, has served as the Governor's official residence since 1870. Within the context of furnishings which have been used and enjoyed by many Maryland First Families, the walls of Government House provide an ideal setting for this display of paintings so rich in Maryland history.

Drawing Room, Government House
Works exhibited in the Drawing Room include paintings by Thomas Sully, John Hesselius, and Francis Guy.

Reception Room, Government House
The Reception Room features works by Victor Lemmens, Hugh Bolton Jones, Thomas Whittridge, and Charles Hawthorne. Through the doorway, Thomas Sully's Sarah Esther Hindman is visible in the Drawing Room.

The Parlor, Government House
Thomas Wilmer Dewing's well-known impressionist work, Lady with A Fan , hangs in the Parlor along with J. Alden Weir's Flower Girl and works by Samuel Colman, Thomas Doughty, and Eastman Johnson.

The Parlor also features the sculptural work of William Henry Rinehart, paintings by Dwight William Tryon and Alice Worthington Ball, as well as a copy of the first Peabody Gallery Exhibition Catalogue of 1881.
