74 Kent County Sct On this 6 day of March 1855 personally appears Chester Tillison a free negro before me the Subscriber a Justice of the Peace in and for Kent County and made oath on the Holy Evangely of Almighty God that he had his free papers or certificate of freedom (granted to him by the clerk of Kent County Court on the 8 December 1843) in a chest or box in the granary belonging to Jacob Tome in Port Deposit Cecil County at the time said granary & its contents were distroyed by fire on the night of the 21s July 1854 and that his chest and free papers among other things were burnt up in said granary Sworn to before James Graves see act 1850 ch 66 sec 4 see manumission of Maria Scott recorded in Liber J N G N.o 3 page 407 To the clerk of the Circuit Court for Kent County This is to certify that Chester Tillison a free negro who is now present & applying for a certificate of freedom (the first being distroyed by fire in Port Deposit on the 21s July 1854) is the identical person who was manumitted by Maria Scott on the 8 Dec 1843 the said negro Chester belonged to & lived with my father Mr Pery Wethered for several years before & after he was free and the said negro Chester has always been a well disposed and trust worthy servant March 6 1855 John L Wethered Chester is about fifty years old five feet eight inches high a scar near his left eye & a small scar on his left wrist Filed and recorded on the 6 day of March 1855 and certificate issued By Jas F Gordon clk To the clerk of the Circuit Court for Kent County Md This is to certify that a negro man named Joseph Miller now present and applying for a certificate of freedom was born of a free woman and raised in Kent County And is now about thirty |
