52 Byrn that the said negro man Charles to whom this Certificate is delivered is the identical person mentioned by that name in a manumission of Mary Nicols and Henry Nicols 3rd and duly acknowledged and recorded amongst the Land Records of Caroline County by which said manumission it is declared that the said negro therein mentioned named Charles should be free on the first day of January in the year eighteen hundred and nine and I further Certify that from the appearance of the said negro called Charles and from his own decleration that he is about twenty four years of age he is five feet five inches high a likely smart looking well sett fellow of tolerable black complexion and some what bow leg'd and has had a small peice cut slantwise off of the fore finger of his left hand and no other notable marks which I can discover he says he was raised partly in Caroline & partly in Queen Ann's Counties In Testimony whereof I have hereto set my hand and affixed the public seal (seal) of my office this sixth day of January in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and eleven Tho: Richardson Clerk of Caroline County Court Caroline County to wit Be it remembered that on this 5th Feby 1812 I delivered to negro Terry therein named a certificate as follows Viz The State of Maryland Caroline County to wit Whereas heretofore to wit on the seventeenth day of January in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twelve Rachel Rhodes of Caroline County by Deed of manumission duly executed acknowledged and recorded amongst the Records of Caroline County manumitted and set free a certain negro Girl called Terry to be free and at liberty from the date of said manumission.
