Caroline County Court, Certificates of Freedom, 1806-1827

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit:  Whereas application hath been made to me by
a coloured man named James Groce for a Certificate of his freedom agreeably to
the act of Assembly in such case made and provided by which said act free negroes and
molattoes are permitted to travel out of this State upon the obtention of a certificate of
being free born and whereas also upon the oath of Joshua Chance of Caroline County
that the said coloured man named James Groce for whom this Certificate is made
was free born I do therefore grant his said application and hereby certify that he is
five feet three inches high or thereabouts says he was twenty three years of age the Fifth day
of December last was born and raised in Caroline County and of a dark brown complexion
has a small scar under the outer corner of his right eye and no other notable mark
or scar that I have discovered
                      In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name & affix the Public
(seal)              seal of my office this 20th day of July anno Domini 1826

certificate of her freedom agreeably to the act of assembly in such
case made and provided by which said act free negroes and molattoes
are permitted to travel out of this state upon their obtention of a certificate
of being free born; And whereas also upon the oath of Hugh
Taylor of Caroline County that the said negro woman named Leah
Rich for whom this certificate is made was free born I do therefore
grant her said application and hereby certify that she says she is
thirty seven years of age or thereabouts is about four feet eleven and
a quarter inches high of a dark brown complexion in person fat
and thick round was born and raised in Caroline county has a large
scar on her left cheek and no other notable mark or scar that I
have discovered
                In testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix
(seal)        the public seal of my office this twenty second day of July
                Anno Domini eighteen hundred and twenty six
