State of Maryland Caroline County to wit  Whereas on the Twenty fourth day of June in the
year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and Twenty four a certain Nathaniel Potter of
the City of Baltimore by deed of manumission duly executed acknowledged and recorded among the
land records of caroline County did manumit and set free a certain negro man named Philip
Byas and the said negro man named Philip Byas having made application to me for a Certificate
of his freedom agreeably to the act of assembly in such case made and provided and I being
satisfied of my own personal knowledge that the said negro man named Philip Byas for
whom this certificate is made is the same person mentioned in the said manumission
I do therefore grant his said application and hereby certify that the said negro man named
Philip Byas is forty years of age or thereabouts he is about five feet five inches high of
a brown complexion was born in Talbot County and raised in Caroline County the
thumb of his right hand cut off at the first joint & no other mark or scar that I
have observed      In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix the
(Seal)   public seal of my office this 31st day of July Anno Domini 1824

Caroline County to wit;   Whereas application hath been made to me by a coloured woman
named Mahala Wisher for a Certificate of her freedom agreeably to the act of assembly in
such case made and provided by which said act free negroes and molattoes are permitted
to travel out of this state upon the obtention of a Certificate of being free born and whereas
also upon the Oath of Samuel Hardcastle of Caroline County that the said coloured
woman named Mahala Wisher for whom this Certificate is made was free born
I do therefore grant her said application and hereby Certify that she is five feet four
inches high or thereabouts says he is about sixteen years of age was born
and raised in Caroline County of a complexion nearly black has a large scar of a
Burn on the right hand fingers thumb and wrist and no other notable scar or
mark that I have observed                              In Testimony whereof I
          hereto subscribe my name & affix the public seal of my office this 23d
(seal)  day of August Anno Domini 1824      Jo Richardson Clk
