State of Maryland Caroline County to wit  Whereas application
has been made to me by a negro man named Peter Dill for a Certificate
of his freedom agreeably to an act of assembly of the said State passed at
November session Eighteen hundred and five by which said act free negroes
& molattoes are permitted to travel out of the said State upon their
obtention of a certificate of their being free born and whereas also upon
the oath of Jacob Reese that the said negro man Peter Dill was free
born      I do therefore hereby Certify that the said negro Peter Dill
is five feet seven inches high or thereabouts says he is about twenty five
years of age the seventeenth day of May Eighteen hundred and Eighteen
of a black complexion has a small scar across the second
joint of his left thumb a small scar between his eyebrows rather
on the right side & above the upper part of his nose his right little
finger & the two next to it crooked & the left little finger crooked
and no other notable mark that I have observed
                            In Testimony whereof I have hereto set my
       (seal)             hand and affixed the public seal of my Office
                            this 25.th day of May Anno Domini 1810

Caroline County to wit

Whereas on the fifteenth day of november in the year
of our Lord Eighteen hundred and sixteen Daniel Cheezmen
of Caroline County by Deed of manumission duly executed
acknowledged and recorded amongst the records of Caroline
County did manumit and set free a negro man named
Jacob Howard to be free from the date of manumission
and wheareas also the said negro man named Jacob
Howard hath made application to me for a
certificate of his freedom agreeably to an act
of assembly in such case made and provided
