Caroline County Circuit Court, Certificates of Freedom, 1857-1864

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit:   Whereas Frederick Smith
hath made application to me for a Certificate of his Freedom agreeably
to Law and whereas on the Oath of John E. Starkey has been proven
that said Frederick Smith was free born.  I do therefore grant this
Certificate.  He is now about twenty one years of age five feet four
inches high or thereabout of a black Complexion was born & raised
in Queen Anns County and has a small Scar on his left Cheek
and has no other notable mark or Scar that I have observed
             In Testimony whereof I hereunto Subscribe my name and
(Seal)    affix the Seal of the Circuit Court for Caroline County this
             23.rd day of December Anno Domini Eighteen hundred and fifty nine

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit:  Whereas Richard B Grosse
hath made application to me for a certificate of his freedom agreeably
to law.   And whereas on the Oath of James Swan has been proven
that Said Richard B Grosse was free born.  I do therefore grant this certificate
he is now twenty five Years of age five feet and Seven inches high
or thereabout of a black Complexion was born and raised in Caroline
County & has no notable mark or scar that I have observed
(seal)   In Testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe my name & affix
          the Seal of the Circuit Court for Caroline County this 23rd
          day of December Anno Domini 1859
