Caroline County Circuit Court, Certificates of Freedom, 1857-1864

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit:   Whereas application hath
been made to me by Mary Cook for a certificate of her freedom ^agreeably^ to law
and whereas on the Oath of William Vaux has been proven that the
Said Mary Cook was free born.      I do therefore grant this certificate
She is now about twenty years of age five feet four and a half high of
a yellow complexion was born and raised in Caroline County and has
a large scar on the back of her neck caused by the Cut of an axe and
has no other notable mark or scar that I have observed
                   In Testimony whereof I hereunto Subscribe my name and
(Seal)          affix the Seal of the Circuit Court for Caroline County
                   this 25th day of April Anno Domini 1859

made to me by Henry Downs for a certificate of his freedom agreeably to Law
and whereas on the Oath of William E Mason has been proven that the said
Henry Downs was free born  I do therefore grant this certificate.  He is now about
twenty three years of age five feet nine inches and a half high of a chestnutt complexion
and has no notable mark or scar that I have observed
                In Testimony whereof I have hereunto Subscribe my
(Seal)       name and affix the Seal of the Circuit Court for
                Caroline County this 26th day of April Anno Domini
                1859
