Caroline County Circuit Court, Certificates of Freedom, 1857-1864

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit:   Whereas Anna Maria
Nicols hath made application to me for a certificate of her freedom agreeably
to law   And whereas on the oath of John R Willis has been
proven that said Anna Maria Nicols was free born.   I do therefore
grant this Certificate.  She is now about twenty one years of age four
feet and one half inch high or thereabout of a black Complexion was
born & raised in Caroline County and has a Scar on the back of her
hand caused by the Cut of a knife & has no other Scar or mark that
I have observed
(Seal)    In Testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe my name and affix the
             Seal of the Circuit Court for Caroline County this 27th day of
          February A. D. 1860

                                                           Circuit Court for Caroline County

hath made application to me for a certificate of her freedom agreeably to
law:  and whereas on the oath of John R Willis has been proven that
said Henrietta Nicols was free born I do therefore grant this Certificate
She is now about ninteen years of age five feet high or thereabout of
of black Complexion was born & raised in Caroline County and has
a Scar on the rist of the right arm & has no other mark or Scar that
I have observed
(Seal)   In Testimony whereof I hereunto Subscribe my name and
             affix the Seal of the Circuit Court for Caroline County this 27th
day of February Anno Domini Eighteen Hundred and Sixty
