Caroline County Circuit Court, Certificates of Freedom, 1857-1864

State of Maryland             Whereas Thomas J. Gross hath made application
Caroline County to wit      to me for a certificate of his freedom agreeably
                                         to law  And whereas on the oath of James
Swan has been proven that said Thomas J. Gross was free born
I do therefore grant Certificate  He is now about twenty one years
of age five feet Six inches high of a Black Complexion & was born
& raised in Caroline County and has no notable mark or scar that
I have observed
(seal)   In Testimony whereof I hereunto Subscribe my name and affix
    the Seal of the Circuit Court for Caroline ^County^ this tenth day of January
    Anno Domini Eighteen Hundred and fifty Sixty

                                                           Circuit Court for Caro. Co.


State of Maryland Caroline County to wit:   Whereas Charles W. Loockerman
hath made application to me for a Certificate of his freedom agreeably
to law and whereas on the Oath of James Swan has been proven
that Said Charles W. Loockerman was free born.  I do therefore
grant this Certificate.  He is now about twenty one years of age
five feet Seven inches high or thereabout of a light Mulatto Complexion
was born & raised in Caroline County and has no notable
mark or scar that I have observed
(Seal)    In Testimony whereof I have hereunto Subscribed my name
             and affix the Seal of the Circuit Court for Caroline County
             this tenth day of January Eighteen hundred and Sixty
