Caroline County Circuit Court, Certificates of Freedom, 1857-1864

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit:   Whereas Mary E. Baker
hath made application to me for a certificate of her freedom agreeably
at law.   And whereas on the oath of John K. Emerson has been
proven that Said Mary E. Baker was free born.   I do therefore grant
this Certificate.   She is now about twenty one years of age five feet
and two inches high of a Chestnutt Complexion & has a small
scar in the palm of her right hand & has no other notable mark
or scar that I have observed was born in Co. & State aforesaid
            In Testimony whereof I hereunto Subscribe my name and  
(Seal)   affix the Seal of the Circuit Court for Caroline County
            this 15th day of November Anno Domini 1859

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit  Whereas Emily Green
hath made application to me for a certificate of her freedom agreeably
to law  and whereas on the Oath of Elijah Sowers has been proven
that Said Emilly Green was free born.  I do therefore grant this
Certificate  She is now about twenty six years of age five feet
three inches and a half high or thereabout of a Mulatto Complexion
was born and raised in Caroline County and has no
notable mark or Scar that I have observed
             In Testimony whereof I hereunto Subscribe my
(Seal)    name and affix the Seal of the Circuit Court for Caroline
             County this 17th day of December Anno Domini eighteen hundred
             and fifty nine
