Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

agreeably to the act of assembly in such case made and provided by which said
act free negroes and mulattoes are permitted to travel out of this State upon the
obtention of a certificate of being free born, And whereas also upon the oath of
Henry T. Dean of Caroline County that the said negro man named James
Bryon for whom this certificate is made is free born; I do therefore grant his said
application and hereby certify that from his own account he was twenty two years
of age some time in March last in the year Eighteen hundred and thirty three
five feet and six inches high or thereabouts born and raised in Caroline County
complexion Black and has a large scar of a cut just below the cap of the right
knee and another scar of a cut on the inside part of his left foot and no other
notable marks or scars that I have observed
(seal)   In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affixed the public
            seal of my Office this 10th day of March Anno Domini 1834

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit; Whereas application hath been made to
me by a negro man name William Henry for a certificate of his freedom agreeably
to the act of assembly in such case made and provided and whereas also
upon the oath of Thomas H. Baynard of Kent County in the State of Delaware
and upon the admission of Matthew Driver and John R. Driver two of the
heirs of Henry Driver deceased that the said negro man named William Henry
for whom this certificate is made is now free I do therefore grant his said application
and hereby certify that from his own account he is about thirty years of age
five feet two and one half inches high or thereabouts of a brown complexion was
born and raised in Caroline County and has a small scar of a cut perpenticularly
over his left eye brow and two small scars of cuts or scratches on his right cheek
and something like a natural mark between his eye brows at the top of his nose
and another large scar of a cut on his right foot and has no other notable marks
or scars that I have observed
(seal)   In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix the public
           seal of my office this 28th day of March Anno Domini 1834
