Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit; Whereas application hath been made to me
by a negro man named Henry Groce for a certificate of his freedom agreeably to the Act
of assembly in such case made and provided by which said act free negroes and
mulattoes are permitted to travil of this State upon the obtention of a certificate of
being free born and whereas also upon of Robert Wooters of Caroline County
that the said negro man named Henry Groce for whom this certificate is made is free
born I do therefore grant his said application and hereby certify that from his own
account he is about twenty six years of age five feet five and one half inches high
or thereabouts of a bright mulattoe complexion was born and raised in Caroline
County and has a tolerable large scar of a cut across his left knee and has no other
notable marks or scars that I have observed
(seal)   In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix the public seal
           of my office this 26th day of November A. D. 1833

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit  Whereas application hath been made
to me by a negro woman named Ann Warner for a certificate of her freedom agreeably
to the act of assembly in such case made and provided by which said acts free negroes
and mulattoes are permitted to travil out of this State up^on^ the obtention of a certificate
of being free born.  And whereas also upon the Oath of Margaret Black of Caroline
County that the said negro woman named Ann Warner for whom this certificate is
made is free born; I do therefore grant her said application and hereby certify that
from her own account she was nineteen years of age in September last four feet eleven
and one half inch high or thereabouts born and raised in Caroline County complexion
dark mulattoe; and has a small scar of a burn near the corner of her right eye occasioned
as she says from the burn of a cigar and no other notable marks or scars that I
have observed
(seal)   In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix the public seal
           of my office this 3.rd day of March A. D. 1834
