Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit;  Whereas application hath been
made to me by a coloured man named Richard Hubbard for a certificate
of his freedom agreeably to the act of assembly in such case made and provided
by which said act free negroes and mulattoes are permitted to travel out of this
State upon the obtention of a certificate of being free born and whereas also upon
the oath of Andrew Covey of Caroline County that the said Coloured man named
Richard Hubbard for whom this certificate is made was free born  I do therefore grant
his ^said^ application and hereby certify that from his own account he is twenty two years of age
this month five feet eight and a half inches high or thereabouts was born and raised in
Caroline County of a black complexion has a scare on the out side of his right leg a
little above the ancle about the size of a half Doller and no other notable marks or scears
that I have observed
(seal)   In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix the public seal
of my office this 21st day of March Anno Domini 1831         Jo Richardson  Clk of

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit;  Whereas heretofore to wit on the thirtieth day
of December in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty a certain
William Turner of Caroline County by Deed of Manumission duly executed acknowledged
and recorded among the Land records of Caroline County aforesaid did manumit &
set free a negro man called Samuel Miller to be free born and after the date of the
said Manumission; And whereas the said ^negro man^ Samuel Miller hath this day made
application to me for a certificate of his freedom agreeably to the act of assembly in
such case made and provided and being satisfied by the oath of John Whitly that the
said negro man Samuel Miller is the same person mentioned in the said manumission
I do therefore grant his said application and hereby certify that from his age as expressed
in the said Manumission he was thirty seven years of age the thirteenth day of
August last five feet & three inches high or thereabouts of a Mulatto complexion was
born in Queen Anns and raised in Caroline County the little finger of his right
crooked occasioned as he says by a burn on the same arm a large scar of which
remains on the inside of his arm a little below the elbow joint and a scar on
the left hand a little above the hand joint of his fore finger and a natural
mark on the right side of his neck and no other notable marks or scars that I
have observed.      In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name & affix the public
(seal)    seal of my office this 4th day of April Anno Domini 1831
